Hopi Buckles

96130295 Hopi Buckle

This very beautiful, highly polished dress belt buckle has so much going on, that we had to ask the Silversmith, Dorothy Poleyma-Kyasyousie to tell us the story behind it.  It measures 1 1/2 by 3 inches and will accommodate up to a 1 1/4 inch belt.  Dorothy's hallmark, DP appears on the back.
"The Badger/Butterfly buckle shows their contribution and their abilities brought to Oraibi, as each clan was expected to bring something that would help further the well being of the village and its people.  The altar in the middle represents the Po-wa-muy and the Neman-tikive ceremonies that evoke the Kachina Spirits.  The medicinal flowers and plants that surround them denotes their healing ability, spiritual and physical.  The Badger hand also signifies healing as well as the ability to multiply food (when preparing food a woman uses her left hand to add the first ingredient to ensure that there will be enough food to feed everyone) as well as fertility, to ensure the future generations of Hopi.  Tawa-ee-dana (Sun, our Father) has led them to their destination providing protection (signified by the two eagle feathers on each side of him) and guidance since their emergence from the si-pa-pu (the entrance from the last world to this world located somewhere in the Grand Canyon) and meeting Masau (the Holy Ghost) who instructed them and provided them tools to survive the long migration where he would meet them again to forever dwell in their chosen land."
It is also worth noting that Badger is the symbol used by the E.M.T. workers at Hopi!
